Gough Whitlam Dies (1916-2014)

The 21st Prime Minster of Australia, Gough Whitlam, has died at age 98. Whitlam, one of Australia’s most respected and defining politicians, was Prime Minster from 1972-1975, ending 23 years of Coalition government. Following his famous “It’s Time” election campaign, the Whitlam government brought in a great many changes to Australia, including abolishing university fees, introducing Australia’s healthcare system Medicare, returning traditional lands to the Gurindji people, and withdrawing the remaining troops in Vietnam. Whitlam was a transformative figure who modernised Australia, and following his controversial dismissal by Governor General Sir John Kerr in 1975, Whitlam has developed a great legacy and remains the most inspirational Australian politician.
