Reportedly kept secret for five years, a new documentary, Salinger (2013) is being released on September 6, 2013, about reclusive American author, JD Salinger, who penned the popular coming-of-age novel The Catcher in the Rye (1951). Salinger is also well-known for his extreme shunning of publicity after publishing the book, becoming notoriously private. The film features over 150 interviews with various actors and authors including Gore Vidal, Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Cusack, E.L. Doctorow, Tom Wolfe, Martin Sheen and Danny DeVito, among others. Salinger was labelled as a ‘genius hermit’ and ‘the Howard Hughes of his day’ due to the mystery surrounding his disappearance from the public eye. The documentary explores the obsession with Salinger’s life and identity and also of the author’s inner demons and conflicts that purportedly led to his reclusive nature. The film is written and directed by Shane Salerno.
